Digital Terrain Models (DTMs) are used for various purposes, including land use planning, forest resource management and soil science. However, the accuracy of DTMs can be limited by the uncertainties of using different interpolation techniques to create them. Thus, this study looked at how different estimation techniques such as inverse distance weighting (IDW), natural neighbor, and triangulated irregular network (TIN) affect the accuracy and reliability of a DTM for practical use. The results showed that DTMs created by averaging the values of all points in a cell had the highest accuracy (RMSE = 4.97), followed by TIN (RMSE = 5.29), with other techniques like IDW and nearest neighbor recording similar accuracy. A spatial agreement between data sources showed that TIN had the highest agreement at 92%, while DTMs created by averaging all points in a cell had the lowest agreement at 25%.

Though telecommunication companies and their networks are essential to the advancement of technology, much of what goes into the construction of these networks is still very much a manual process.  Largely the engineering and construction management activities that build our nations fiber optic infrastructure are still performed on paper.  This causes a lot of duplication of effort and makes adapting to real world circumstances a slow and drawn-out process that tends to lend itself to instances of error and miscommunication.  We at Palmetto Engineering and Consulting are working diligently to develop new processes and applications to help bring this industry into the digital age.  The backbone of these efforts is done utilizing GIS technologies to design, engineer, and manage construction on these projects.  Doing so has helped us speed up deliveries, lower costs, and has enabled us to provide more products and services to our clients.  Our company culture has reaped benefits as well.  Different projects often operated in small silos within our company.  Utilization of GIS technologies has helped tear down walls within our organization and communication between departments is stronger than ever.  As we continue our GIS journey it is my goal to make the process completely paperless.  In this presentation I will present the challenges we encountered along the way, provide insights, and hopefully help anyone who might be going through the same issues within their organization.
